Admission Deadlines
The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program accepts applications for the fall or spring semesters, and applicants are encouraged to submit their application materials as early as possible but before the deadlines below.
| FALL Application Deadline | FALL Decision Notification | Enrollment Decision Deadline |
| January 15* | by March 1 | April 1 |
| March 15** | by May 1 | June 1 |
| June 15 | by July 1 | August 1 |
| SPRING Application Deadline | SPRING Decision Notification | |

*US applications received by this date will be considered for company-sponsored fellowships. US applications for spring are considered for these fellowships in the following fall. Generally, these fellowships are not available for international students.
**We regret that we cannot process international applications after these dates: March 15 for fall and September 1 for spring.
We encourage all applicants to submit an application online using our online application, a part of the ApplyYourself Application Network. You will receive a PIN and Password so that you can return to work on your application over several sessions. Your information is transmitted through a secured server and is kept confidential until you submit your application. Only after you submit your application will it be available for review by the MEM Admissions Committee.
We also accept paper applications. Application forms and other program information may be obtained through a request via e-mail to memp@pratt.duke.edu, or by downloading the following electronic documents:

Tuition
The 2007-2008 academic year tuition for the program is $4,125 per course taken at the university. In general, completion of the eight required program courses would result in a full-time tuition cost of $33,000.
Note: the two course credits earned through the internship requirement do not incur tuition charges.
Admission Prerequisites
Admission to the MEM program requires that each applicant have a bachelor's degree in engineering or science from an accredited institution, and official transcripts are required. It is also required that each applicant provide results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). In addition, international students are required to provide results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Two recommendation forms must be submitted with the application, and all applicants must submit a resume and statement of purpose.
Please note:
You may report your GRE and TOEFL scores to the MEM Program by using the institution code 5156; we do not use a department code. We cannot accept the GMAT in place of the GRE.
The Master of Engineering Management degree has a participatory approach to education. We require the TOEFL scores to ensure adequate ability to contribute to the classroom discussion. Our policy is that international students must take the TOEFL unless:
- they are from the United Kingdom, Australia, or other English-speaking countries;
- they have graduated with an undergraduate or graduate degree from a U.S. college or university; or
- they have been working in the U.S. for at least two years.
Spring Admission
Students may enter in the spring semester, and though the majority of students enter in the fall, previous spring entrants have not had any problems integrating into the program. The program's primary career development activities are initiated in August at the beginning of the fall semester, but spring semester entrants will be given all of the materials and resources to begin their own career development activities and "catch up". They may also choose to focus on career development in the following fall when we begin a new cycle of activities. Similarly, orientation activities are somewhat abbreviated for spring entrants but all essential information is provided, and spring entrants may attend all orientation activities in the fall to catch up on any information they feel they may have missed.
Internship Requirement
The summer internship is an integral part of the program, and a written report and oral presentation are required and must be approved before graduation is permitted. Students are required to arrange their own, engineering-related, summer employment internship lasting a minimum of eight weeks, preferably twelve. While it is preferred that the internship occur in the summer preceding enrollment, either a summer internship or full-time employment following the course work may fulfill this requirement, with prior approval. Note that we cannot accept an internship that was completed before the student received his or her bachelor's degree.
Note that international students who enter the program in January (spring) will not be able to complete an internship in the US the following summer term. The US Department of Homeland Security requires that international students be enrolled full-time in and complete two semesters of coursework in F-1 status before applying for off-campus work authorization, commonly called Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Students who start the MEM program in the fall in F-1 status meet this requirement. However, students who begin the program in January in F-1 status are required to be enrolled full-time for the spring semester and the following fall semester before becoming eligible to apply for off-campus work authorization. They may then apply for CPT for the following spring semester, or they may choose to continue as a full-time student in the following spring semester and apply for CPT for the following summer.
Dartmouth Option
Dartmouth College offers a Master of Engineering Management program in which students take five management courses, a three-course design sequence, two applied math courses, and three electives. The required management courses cover finance, marketing, operations management, and organizational behavior and have been designed specifically for the Dartmouth Master of Engineering Management program by Tuck School of Business faculty. They include core business school materials adapted and enhanced for the needs of engineering students. As electives, students can take second year MBA electives at Tuck School, graduate engineering electives, or electives within Dartmouth's other graduate schools or Vermont Law School. Duke students are permitted to take one term in the MEM program at Dartmouth College, after approval by Dartmouth College and the Thayer School of Engineering, and Dartmouth students are permitted to take one term in the MEM program at Duke. In light of scheduling, Duke students usually choose the fall term for this option.
*Duke University offers equal opportunity to all applicants without regard to race, color, creed, sex, age, or national origin.
