Program Extension Options

Though the MEM degree can be completed in just one year, students can opt to extend the program to three semesters. This option is open to students starting in the spring or fall, and roughly 60% of our international students choose this option.

Please note that Career Services has found that staying a third semester does not improve a student's chances for employment. Instead, consider extending the program if you

  • would like take fewer courses to leave more time to adjust to the program or for the wide variety of activities that Duke offers.
  • want to take additional courses. Note that additional courses beyond the eight required courses may be charged additional tuition.

If a student would like to extend the program, they must speak to a program administrator so that correct tuition is charged and registration limits are set. Students should also note that tuition increases occur each year in May for the following academic year, so later semesters will be more expensive.
